Twirler: a mutant affecting the inner ear of the house mouse.
نویسنده
چکیده
T H E mutant twirler, symbol Tw, of the house mouse, Mus musculus, was first recognized by the 'waltzing' behaviour which the heterozygotes show. It was later found to affect the morphology of the inner ear and, when homozygous, to cause death of new-born animals through harelip and cleft palate. This paper describes the behaviour and ear defects of heterozygotes and the appearance of homozygotes. It also describes the genetic tests carried out to determine the mode of inheritance.

Cell Type–Specific Transcriptome Analysis Reveals a Major Role for Zeb1 and miR-200b in Mouse Inner Ear Morphogenesis
Cellular heterogeneity hinders the extraction of functionally significant results and inference of regulatory networks from wide-scale expression profiles of complex mammalian organs. The mammalian inner ear consists of the auditory and vestibular systems that are each composed of hair cells, supporting cells, neurons, mesenchymal cells, other epithelial cells, and blood vessels. We developed a...
متن کاملA Noncoding Point Mutation of Zeb1 Causes Multiple Developmental Malformations and Obesity in Twirler Mice
Heterozygous Twirler (Tw) mice develop obesity and circling behavior associated with malformations of the inner ear, whereas homozygous Tw mice have cleft palate and die shortly after birth. Zeb1 is a zinc finger protein that contributes to mesenchymal cell fate by repression of genes whose expression defines epithelial cell identity. This developmental pathway is disrupted in inner ears of Tw/...
متن کاملInsertional mutation on mouse chromosome 18 with vestibular and craniofacial abnormalities.
A dominant mutation was generated in transgenic mice as a consequence of insertional mutation. Heterozygous mice from transgenic line 9257 (Tg9257) are hyperactive with bidirectional circling behavior and have a distinctive facial appearance due to hypoplasia of the nasal bone. Morphological analysis of the inner ear revealed asymmetric abnormalities of the horizontal canal and flattening or in...
متن کاملA new gene affecting the morphogenesis of the vestibular part of the inner ear in the mouse.
INTRODUCTION A mutation affecting behaviour occurred in a heterogeneous stock of mice at The Jackson Laboratory in 1956. Genetical tests showed that the mutant gene was semi-dominant with incomplete penetrance, and lethal in the homozygous condition. Further studies established that its effects on the inner ear were different from those of other genes affecting behaviour in a similar manner. It...
متن کاملAutoimmune Inner Ear Disease- A Clinical Viewpoint
Recent developments in medicine have given us a better insight into a group of disorders known as autoimmune diseases. In particular, advances have occurred in our understanding of the Autoimmune Inner Ear Disease (AIED). In this article, the authors review the different postulated theories in the pathogenesis of this disease. The clinical presentation, the available para-clinical diagnostic to...
